Naming the Icelandic Winter of 2015

Love living near the sea, snow covered beaches and all
Jokes are already being thrown around about the winter of 2015. Coffee cups have been made saying “I survived the winter of 2015″ and I am just waiting to see this slogan on t-shirts. I know I have been going on and on about this winter but for real, this past winter has been one of the worst winters in Iceland in years!

The cherry on top of this long winter in the non stop storms this poor island has been hit by. The other night I read an article saying that this winter is one of the stormiest winters of this century! I told you all I was not exaggerating about the bad weather.

One interesting thing I have learned from this terrible winter, (other than the fact that SAD is a real thing, people need sunshine!) I learned a new Icelandic tradition. Apparently is has been tradition to name particularly bad winters throughout Icelandic history with names to represent what the winter was like.

A few examples:
Winter of the Fallen Horse, 1313
The Spring of Ice, 1320
Winter of Torment, 1620
The Great Winter of Frost, 1918

You get the idea. Currently two names in the running for the 2015 winter: The Great Windy Winter and Windy Butthole. In case you couldn’t tell, it has been a bit windy around here!

As I have survived the winter of 2015 I feel like I should suggest a few of my own names for this past winter based off my own experience and thoughts.

The Year Winter Arrived in Fall

Thingvellir, Iceland Seriously though, why did it need to snow in September, that was suppose to be our time to enjoy the beautiful colors of fall in Iceland! Oh well, it still looked beautiful. Next year though, I am really hoping for no snow.

Winter of the Frozen Trees

First Snow in IcelandNot only did the trees in Iceland have to deal with major frostbite, but being hit with major winds every other day. We had the biggest wind storm of the winter last weekend and there are tree casualties all over town.

The Winter of the SAD Epidemic

Polar Night IcelandWith months of darkness and non stop storms us inhabitants of Iceland are definitely feeling the effects of SAD. It is to the point now where when we wake up to another storm we just laugh, because we have gone crazy, and we really need some sunshine.

The Winter the Sun Got Lost

Helgafell, IcelandSunshine, did you forget about us crazy people who decided to make the arctic our home? In the month of February the amount of sunshine we saw in Iceland could be counted in hours, not days, hours. Yes, it was as painful as it sounds.

The Winter of the Flying People

Last weekend Iceland was hit with its biggest storm of the winter and those wind gusts were no joke, they swept people straight off their feet!

The Winter of 50 Shades of Blue

Grotta IcelandThanks to days full of cloudy skies and daylight that never was brighter than dusk the skies were constantly colored in beautiful shades of blue. When the sun did manage to break through it looked like a sky full of cotton candy. If only we could have these colors and never the grey sky that brings the storms.

The Spring of Cabin Fever

Helgafell, IcelandWhen us individuals with cabin fever are let outside after months of being stuck inside we tend to get very exciting about anything and everything.

Okay these names don’t make the winter sound that bad, but positive thoughts are really all that has gotten me through this winter so I can’t change now! And on a truly positive note yesterday the sun finally found us in the Arctic and it was absolutely glorious!

Beach in IcelandYesterday gave me hope that I may actually survive this winter. We are not going to talk about the fact that snow is on the forecast for today. In my mind Spring has finally arrived in Iceland.

Question of the Day?
What would you name your winter?

Despite the crazy winter, Iceland still looks beautiful. The southeastern US had a pretty crazy winter too, but not as crazy as your’s.

At least we haven’t been hit with the mass amounts of snow that the east coast of the US has, thankfully! But Iceland is still quite beautiful on those calm winter days :)

I like Winter of the Flying People personally! ;) x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think that is the winner for me as well :)

how on earth did I manage to go on Nov and hit a warm patch??? I like the Flying People too, thats insane!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It was so nice and mild in November, it was lovely! Usually the winter is much more mild than this past one, so you chose a good time to come visit!

Slovenian winter would be: The Bad Predicted Winter because they always gave really bad forecasts that never happened, it got some classes and routes closed or cancelled on the days we really didn’t need to and on the days we really did needed special measures, everything was like in any other day. Crazy! And I love the Winter of the Flying People haha! Hope spring arrives soon!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh darn! If the weather is bad nothing is cancelled here, I am just dreaming of a snow day!

  • http://www.adventurings.com Cynthia

I can’t even believe that photo of the person getting swept off their feet by the wind!! Can that even happen? (I’m always kind of worried that kind of thing would happen to me!) This winter in Czech Republic was pretty dang normal so I don’t think it really deserves a name, haha.

    • http://www.theoverseasescape.com/ Margo

agreed! I did a triple take on that one!

no matter the name, good luck with the rest of winter Kaelene!

      • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Margo :) Thankfully it is looking up for us now, fingers crossed:)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Isn’t that picture crazy! I am always certain I am going to get blown away in the wind and after seeing that picture I was like ahh I knew it could happen!

I think I’d vote for the Windy Butthole winter. Just because. Don’t hate, but our winter was mild and nonexistent until February. Now it’s spring with a few randomly cold days in the mix. So our winter would probably be called “The Winter That Was Late to Its Own Party” or something like that.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha isn’t that name great, I like it too :) A mild winter soudns quite lovely to me!

  • http://prettythingandco.com/ Madaline

EEEK. I adore the snow and would love to live some where snowy, however, I just adore the sun when it hits you on the head and warms you up - it’s just such a happy feeling. At least you got all those gorgeous photos!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh I just love how nice the sunshine feels :) You just can’t be in a bad mood when the sun is out!

  • http://bailiehemborg.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

I love naming things and this sounds like a great tradition!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Isn’t it a fun tradition! Do they do things like this in Sweden?

  • Beth

Yikes! And it being your first one there…well done! :) I hate windy winters. I’d rather have constant snow than constant wind, any day. But at least folks have a bit of humor with it.

Our winter has been so stupidly mild and non-wintry that it’s barely felt like a season at all. We had one weekend of snow, in Fall (Nov), and then this winter has been warm, and fairly dry. I’d call it the Winter of Disappointment. Or maybe The Winter of California Weather.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I really hate wind so it was not my favorite winter. This was actually my second winter here, I think if this was my first it would have scared me back home ha. But having humor with it really helps :)

The Winter of Torment in 1620, hahaha, that’s hilarious! Personally I think the Winter of Flying People is a good choice for 2015.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha some of the names of past winters were hilarious! I think Winter of the Flying People is the perfect choice as well:)

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

windy butthole haha. i feel sorry for the fallen horse in 1313.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha. Gah I know right, one of the names was Winter of Slaughter, I don’t even want to know what happened that winter!

  • http://www.sedivaabroad.com/ Sarah Elizabeth

Hahahaha love all these names xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I really like the tradition of naming winters is actually really fun :)

  • http://www.slightlyastray.com/ Anna | slightly astray

Wow! I can’t believe that the winds are that crazy to lift a grown person off the ground like that!! That’s kinda terrifying! I’m glad spring is starting to come around. I hope you get more sun soon!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know! When I saw that picture I was like well that is worrisome, I don’t want to go outside on windy days!

  • http://www.brookemeaganjones.com/ Brooke Jones

Girl, I feel your pain! Well, sort of. We didn’t actually get winter until February and we’ve had a lot more sunshine, but we are BURIED in snow! I’m still not convinced it’s going to be all gone before next winter. There’s saying it’s as bad or worse than the legendary White Juan of 2004. At least we can bask in our misery together! I’m thinking mother nature is saving the best summer ever for the Maritimes and Iceland! Also, that flying picture is nuts!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The only good thing about all the wind is that is blew the snow away. I have a feeling it will be back though. I feel like mother nature owes us some awesome summers!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

Oh man - it looks and sounds like it’s been absolutely FREEZING!!! I have no idea how you coped! Seriously, though, that picture of the guy being swept off the ground by strong wind has me freaked out! What the heck! But I love all your snowy pictures, and all your names for the Icelandic Winter 2015 - I hope the sun comes out and thaws everything very soon!! xx

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I have no idea how I have coped either! There have been some weather induced meltdowns that is for sure. Thanks Carly, I am hoping the sunshine comes out as well :)

  • http://whisperingsweetly.com/ Shane Prather

    Wow, I can’t imagine… all this sunshine we’ve been having… ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It must be so rough having all that beautiful sunshine :)

I’m so happy I came across your blog! We’ll be traveling the Ring Road during the first week of May. I really hope all the windy and cloudy winter weather is on it’s way out by then. At least we hope for clear skies so we can glimpse at the Northern Lights! Can’t wait :)

    Thanks for all the info!
