Questions on the Mind

But first a picture of me and my Viking after my annual ball at the Blue Lagoon. Of course we didn’t think to get a picture together at the start of the night. But I am digging our its 3am and we just danced like crazy for the past three hours look.

Annual Ball Blue LagoonMoving on…

So this post is not going to be one that you read to be inspired. It will not leave you with a sense of wanderlust for travel, nor will it leave you with a list of useful tips about traveling to Iceland. This post is what I like to call thought dump, which basically means I have a lot of thoughts running through my mind that are ready to spill out.

So what am I puzzled over lately, I mean that is really what your wondering if you continued to read this post after my warning of an introduction. Well lately I am wondering…

// What should be on my must do list for my upcoming trip to Amsterdam? I am traveling over Easter holiday and so far all I know for sure is that I must visit some tulip fields. I am traveling with two boys which means I am the sole planner of this trip. I really need to get on researching things to do!

// How long can I live in Iceland before I can no longer use the excuse, “oh I haven’t lived here too long, still working on my Icelandic” as my answer to why I don’t speak Icelandic? I am thinking 5 years, and then when I hit the 5 year mark and still get frazzled with Icelandic we will re-evaluate.

// Why didn’t I take more pictures at my annual ball last week? Fail. Oh well I was way too busy having fun, and it seemed to take H and I 5 attempts before getting a decent picture anyways.

Annual Ball Blue LagoonAre we surprised by the fact that we are taking a picture of ourselves?

Annual Ball Blue LagoonOr do I think I am just too above iPhone cameras?

Annual Ball Blue LagoonReally I think I was more interested in getting back to my wine.

Annual Ball Blue LagoonBut finally we got a decent shot. I think everyone at our table thought we were having our own photoshot with the number of pictures H and I took ha. This picture though, we nailed this look on the first shot.

Annual Ball Blue Lagoon

// What is my happy number of blog posts per week? I have been fiddling around with posting 5 times a week, which I feel is a bit too much for me. But then again 3 times a week just doesn’t feel quite right either. For now I am just posting as I feel like it and we will see how that works out.

// H’s birthday is a big one this year and even though it is in June I am already starting to stress out over what I will get him. Confession, I totally suck at giving gifts, but only when it comes to H. Everyone else I can knock it out of the park but for some reason my gift giving skills go out the window when it comes to H. I think it is because he is so darn crafty and creative that his gifts always are so awesome it just makes mine look bad. But not this time, I am going to nail this years birthday gift, I just haven’t quite figured out how.

// How in the world do you put one of those Most Pinned buttons on the side of your blog? You know what I am talking about, where you can use an image from a popular post and people can see the number of times it has been pinned as well as pin it themselves? I tried for far to long to add this to my sidebar, and if you didn’t notice it is still not there, so I failed.

// Why is it so difficult for me to write a pitch email to send to companies. I have several ideas for collaborations with different companies in Iceland, I know what I want to say, but when I go to write the email I get so uncomfortable and nervous I totally freeze up and end up writing nothing. I need to just take the plunge and not be so worried about rejection. Easier said than done right.

// When can I get a puppy??? I am absolutely dying over all the pictures my parents keep sending me of their sweet puppy Opal.

Puppy OpalI mean, this is just too much cuteness for me to handle!

TGIF! Have a great weekend everyone. I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend gearing up for our trip to Amsterdam! Check back in over the weekend for a look at the books I have been reading lately.

    1. You still look adorable at 3 am! If I tried to take photos after dancing all night I’d look a mess.

    2. Anne Frank house!!! Absolute MUST do in Amsterdam.

    3. I also want to know when I can get a puppy.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much :) And yes Anne Frank house is definitely on my list!

I spent 6 years in Denmark and still didn’t always feel comfortable speaking Danish, even though I was more or less fluent. I found the best way to deflect is to complement the person you’re speaking to - “oh but your English is so good!” They don’t want to criticize if you’re complementing them. They also seemed to enjoy being told that their language was so difficult to learn:-)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I so agree with you! When you complement their English or they feel comfortable speaking English with you they are so much nicer!

I went to Amsterdam a few years ago and had an absolute blast! It was a million times more beautiful than I was expecting - this was before the heyday of Pinterest. Search the best places to have traditional Dutch pancakes (go hungry! these are no American pancakes with maple syrup) and poffertjes. They also have a ton of different types of museum to float anyone’s boat - art (Rijksmuseum & Van Gogh were great), cheese museum, weed museum, sex museum, torture museum, Heineken factory tour - you name it. I was a wild and crazy study abroad student when I went so of course we did the whole walk around the Red Light District and “coffee shop” thing, which is an experience in itself haha. Walking around the canals and taking a boat are a perfect way to see the city, it really is stunning.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Elle for all the awesome tips!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

You look so gorgeous at your event! I had a blast in Amsterdam.i loved the Van Gogh museum and ate my fill of pancakes. Plus just meandering along the canals is wonderful - watch out for all the cyclists though!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you Amanda:) I am so excited to just wander around the canals in Amsterdam!

  • http://www.themidnightblog.com/ Charlotte

You guys look gorgeous (even at 3am)!
    Have a lovely weekend. :)

Anne Frank hous for sure!! Book tickets in advance!! Other than that wander the canals. Get some wine and take a canal tour…my fave place to eat was Cafe Bern…delicious fondue!! Have fun!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! That is high on my list to visit the Anne Frank house! And yum adding Cafe Bern to the list, I love fondue!

Haha, I’m getting the sense that H is the Leslie Knope in the equation (especially that one episode where it’s Leslie’s birthday and no one knows what to get her that will be as great as all the things she gets them!) At least you have a few good months to think it over. My fiance’s bday is next week but it’s gonna be kind of awkward because I am waiting to get him presents when we are back in the US so for now I am literally empty-handed….
In Amsterdam? Ann Frank House! (as Jamie said) Canal cruise! Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh museum! (both are excellent). Buying cheese! Hanging out at “coffee” shops (if it’s your thing)… you will soon see what I mean ;) Chillin’ at Vondelpark and on the Leidseplein!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha, I so love the Leslie Knope reference! Yes, it is totally like that ha. I am actually going to the states like a week after H’s birthday and it is looking like his gifts will be waiting for him there so a similar situation here too!

  • http://www.thesunnysideofthis.com/ Isabel

The Anne Frank house for sure and the cool clubbing scene in Amsterdam after a nice visit to a coffee house. Well, while you are there you have to enjoy right?! haha Also the sex museum at downtown. Hope you have lots of fun!! Miha’s birthday is coming up too and since he is a software developer, the only things he loves and wants (and needs, for that matter) are gadgets. So let’s see how much I can afford to get him lol!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! Anne Frank house, coffee shops, the red district, I can’t wait! H is the same. He is a graphic designer so he is always wanting some new gadget. Why must they be so expensive!

  • http://www.tothedayslikethis.com/ Sammy @ Days Like This

Happy Friday lady!! I am sure you will nail the gift this year. Also, LOVE that photo of you and H. such stunners x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Happy weekend to you gal! And thanks so much :) Loving seeing those pictures of you and your man popping up on my insta feed, you look so happy!

I have heard year 3 is a magic number for the language clicking or not, personally for me I felt a surge of wanting to understand around that time but then it waned, you however are already far ahead of me so perhaps it will be better for you.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Depending on the week I will have a desire to study the language, and then other weeks I could not care less. I think year three sounds nice, it would be great to wake up one day and just actually understand what is happening around me!

  • http://dressesandwine.blogspot.ca Janet

Amsterdam is full of so many things to do! A canal boat tour is a must, whichever one you choose, the Anne Frank House of course, the Heineken Brewery, the Red Light district, make sure you get some pancakes! And there are SO many museums if that’s something your interested in! Also, bicycles are a way of life there, so I would recommend renting one!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much for the tips! And yes, renting bicycles just seems like an important part of the experience :)

  • http://www.somethingsaturdays.com/the-blog.html Elizabeth @Something Saturdays

    For Amsterdam:
    - you should rent “canal bikes” (little pedal boats), they are so much fun to use and a unique perspective on the city.
    - Boom Chicago - awesome comedy/improv place in Amsterdam. It’s all in English

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Canal bikes, those sound awesome! Definitely will be checking those out thanks for the tips Elizabeth!

  • http://www.chicadeedee.com/ Dannielle @ Chicadeedee

I feel like I’m crap at giving gifts to my bf too, but can give awesome gifts to anyone else. No idea why. Possibly because he just buys everything he wants anyway. That picture of you guys in the masks is so great!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is crazy since I know I know H so well, but I guess maybe it is because I am with him everyday I kinda forget the little things he may want. And sometimes they are things I just don’t want in my house ha.

  • http://www.brookemeaganjones.com/ Brooke Jones

You two look darn good at 3am :-) Love all the selfies! It’s so hard putting yourself out there and contacting companies. I think it’s probably the thing that gets easier once you start and then you wonder why you didn’t start sooner. Happy Friday!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks so much Brooke! Have a great weekend!

  • http://www.nomadnotebook.com/ Lizzy

You look so pretty! I can advise you not to go to the Heineken Museum in Amsterdam- such a waste of money and time both me and my partner thought. Apparently there’s quite a few good waffle cafes in Amsterdam though which sound nice!

    Lizzy from Nomad Notebook

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Awe thanks so much Lizzy! And thanks for the tip! I am so looking forward to all the waffles and treats I have heard about!

  • http://prettythingandco.com/ Madaline

I need that puppy too. I too have the inability to write a pitch email - I also apparently can’t write an about me page thats decent - which makes me so upset since I think I write decently. Mine always come off sounding like a teen. Ok, now I’m depressed. I think this means I can have wine now. It is socially acceptable at 3pm, right?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I so know what you mean. I know I should update my about page but to be honest it took me almost a month to get it up anyways and for awhile that was my excuse of why I wasn’t starting a blog because I needed an about page first. Wine is basically a fruit so it is acceptable anytime of the day right :) Happy weekend!

  • http://theblondetravelista.com/ Kailey @ The Blonde Travelista

I actually really love when bloggers post topics like this :) It’s a nice break from travel posts and gives me an inside on what’s going on in their life. And can I say you look damn good at 3am? I took a picture at a wedding last weekend after I had been dancing, sent it to my boyfriend, and he replied “you look scary” so clearly I don’t do so well HAHA
I was only in Amsterdam for less than 24 hours so I can’t really give you advice but I would say tulip fields FOR SURE and maybe a canal cruise? I went to a sex show with my contiki and would definitely not recommend that hahah It was so weird and disturbing.

  • http://www.adventuresofalondonkiwi.blogspot.com/ adventuresofalondonkiwi

I have a few quirky places you can visit in A’dam if you fancy a few tips :)

  • http://www.snowflakesincalifornia.blogspot.com/ Nathalie

I have exactly the same thing with my husband! I was - honestly - the best at gift giving until I met him haha. Oh and you two looked absolutely stunning ;) I’ve only been to Amsterdam once so I can’t really give you any inside tips but I do hope you’ll have a great time!

  • Caitlin Travis

This answer is going to be of no help, but maybe the fact that I struggle with so many of these myself will make you less bothered by them?? YES to the “post when you feel it” idea! I promise I read your posts, whether there are 1,2,3, or 4 a week.
I LOVE giving gifts and I used to be so good at giving F gifts. And then one day it got 100x harder. I have no idea why. If you’re putting a couple months of thought into it I’m sure he’ll love be impressed.

  • http://www.travelingbanana.com Hannah @ TravelingBanana.com

Cute couple! Love posts like this too. I’ve got no tips for Amsterdam because it’s a city still on my wish list, but sure you’ll have a great time whatever you do! (I really want to visit the Van Gogh museum though!) 5 posts a week? Woah, I’m impressed. I usually end up with 2 or 3 a week because instead of doing a weekly number I post one day, have 2 days off, post one day, 2 day off, etc. Although this month turned into every other day posts because I just had so much to say about Porto! I’d say follow whatever rhythm feels right for you. We’ll be happy to read whenever you do! :)

Amsterdam must-sees: the Anne Frank House is at the top of the list. I know it’s hyped but the hype is well deserved. There is ALWAYS a line to get in so I suggest either reserving tickets online at least a few weeks in advance or arriving at 8am (an hour before it opens) to beat the crowds.

If you like beer I also suggest the Heineken Experience, Heineken’s brewery tour. I suggest reserving tickets online here too, since you save 2€ per person that way.

Museums: my top pick is the Van Gogh Museum. Like all museums in Amsterdam the admission is a bit steep (15€ when I went last year) but it’s worth every penny.

Heck, you can just read my blog post about my trip to Amsterdam. I talk about all these things and more in better detail:

Regarding Amsterdam, a few safety tips. The train from Schiphol to the Centraal train station is known for its pickpockets. Keep your luggage close. 2nd - Bikes have right of way and if you end up walking on their designated paths, they well run you over.

As for things to see, I second the Anne Frank house, the museums, and getting out on the canals. Walking around the red light district is kind of fun and culturally fascinating, although I’ve never participated. I also once took a day trip to Haarlem which was very interesting.

Aaaah I love your pictures! And YOU DON’T LOOK LIKE YOU’VE BEEN DANCING ALL NIGHT. So that throws that one out of the window. (Too many caps? I’m mostly jealous of your still perfect look ;) ) Can’t help you with the Amsterdam, though I feel your pain on the puppy. As per Icelandic, I can’t relate since everyone in my adopted land (Ireland) speaks English… well, mostly. But as for the gift giving, I suggest playing around on Pinterest and Etsy. I’ve given the boy a few memorable gifts, and though I would love to take credit, it is all to do with the inspiration from others. And never forget that sometimes “experience” gifts are better than actually things. xx Happy travels!!
