An Underwater Adventure

Ever since learning about the Great Barrier Reef way back in elementary school it has been a dream of mine to visit. I mean who doesn’t want to snorkel around the beautiful coral? So when I found myself in in Australia for 4 months you can guess what was at the top of my list of places to visit.

Now when I had put visit the Great Barrier Reef on my bucket list my intention was that I would be snorkeling around happy as a clam checking out the beautiful coral reef and the fishes that called it home. Sounds blissful doesn’t it? Never once did I even toy with the idea of scuba diving down to the Great Barrier Reef, nope, no thank you that was not for me.

I didn’t want to do it. In fact I clearly stated it multiple times during our trip planning, on the flight over, even as we walked over to the booth to sign up, I did not want to do it. I even told one of the cabin crew members he can put my scuba gear back, just snorkeling for me.

Call me dramatic but I was one hundred percent certain that if I put on that scuba gear and attempted to dive down into the water my head would explore when I came back up. That or I would get a series case of Barotrauma, neither or which sounded appealing to me.

So how in the world did I end up with a tank on my back and large flippers on my feet about to trust a man with an Aussie accent so thick I am pretty positive he was not speaking English to take me safely down under water further than I ever wanted to go?

I blame it on my inner spirit that comes out when I travel.

I mean here I was, out on a boat, about to see the Great Barrier Reef, when I thought to myself, am I really going to not try and scuba dive here? How could I pass this kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity up?

I couldn’t.

I am not going to lie, my fear of scuba diving did not go away at all during this experience. But for a brief moment when it was just me floating around exploring the Great Barrier Reef it was pure bliss! And then the pressure in my ears started up again but that is not an important part of the story.

This is why I love traveling. It pushes you so far out of your comfort zone that you surprise yourself with the things you can do. I am still amazed that I actually went scuba diving, even now the thought of scuba diving makes me nervous. But you know what I have never once regretted facing my fears and trying something new while traveling.

And in case you were wondering, as soon as I finished my first dive the gear came right off and I stuck to snorkeling for the rest of the day. I mean how else would I get this awesome picture.

Scuba Diving in AustraliaThat my friends is a picture to show the grandchildren.

Question of the Day?
Have you ever tried something new when traveling that was outside of your comfort zone? How do you feel about scuba diving?

I’ve been snorkelling but never scuba diving. I’d love to do it- but I can definitely see how it seems scary! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

H loves scuba diving and is always trying to get me to try it again. Maybe one day but for now I will stick to snorkeling :)

  • http://whisperingsweetly.com/ Shane Prather

    I really regret only snorkeling!!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I knew I would if I didn’t try scuba diving, now I am so glad I did! My roommate actually backed out of scuba diving and she regretted it. She made another trip back and that time she scuba dived, you will have to make another trip back!

  • http://www.thesunnysideothis.com/ Isabel

So awesome! Unfortunately, I’m not that badass, and I might’ve never saved the money of trips like that because well parties and being 21 (yikes!). But definitely as I have gotten older, I’ve come to realize that this kind of things really give your money’s worth. Awesoooome pictures, as always!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So true! When I was in Australia I just went for everything, even the pricey things, now I am so glad I did just that, it was an amazing experience.

  • http://www.gorjaeous.com/ Jae

I love the sea, but this is something I’m too chicken to try out. I’ve tried snorkeling with family a long, long time ago, but that’s just it. I can’t do scuba diving because the mere thought of staying underwater for that long freaks me out. Someday.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love snorkeling but scuba diving makes me nervous! I don’t know if I will ever try it again, I think I will just stick to snorkeling :)

      • http://www.gorjaeous.com/ Jae

Just thinking about scuba diving drives me insane!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

Well done for doing it Kaelene! That’s what travel is all about for me too - living outside my comfort zone at times. I didn’t scuba dive when I visited the Great Barrier Reef because I wasn’t certified by Ty has his license to dive. I stick to snorkelling, although we haven’t actually done either for such a long time!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Travel totally pushes me out of my comfort zone, it is great isn’t it! H wants to get certified, he loves scuba diving and is always looking at places to go dive at.

  • http://www.nomadnotebook.com/ Lizzy

I’d love to do it seen as we relocated to Queensland, but after swimming way to deep in the swimming pool as a child i’m really unsure as to whether my ears would cope with it! Was it painful for your ears?

    Lizzy from Nomad Notebook

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I did have a hard time with my ears. They teach you how to pop them but my ears just were not cooperating so it was a bit painful for me. They let you test it out and only go down a little bit at first so you could always see how your ears coped:)

      • http://www.nomadnotebook.com/ Lizzy

Ah, thanks! Sounds like I should just give it a go and see how I get on :)

  • http://www.somethingsaturdays.com/the-blog.html Elizabeth @Something Saturdays

I went scuba diving for 1 minute (literally) and I’m shocked I lasted that long - snorkeling is definitely more my thing! It’s great that you went under for long enough to take in the experience and snag some photos!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! The instructor held my hand most of the time ha. I think I will stick to snorkeling now as well:)

  • http://prettythingandco.com/ Madaline

I LOVE scuba diving - it’s something I would like to take the classes for! I’m actually a huge chicken for most things - thank goodness people in Italy are continually worried about death so there’s nothing really dangerous here that ever presents itself to me to do. haha.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am a big chicken as well so it sounds like I would fit in in Italy!

  • http://dressesandwine.blogspot.ca Janet

I am so envious! it looks beautiful! I wouldn’t say pushed out of my comfort zone too much, but the coffee shops in amsterdam are quite the experience! haha along with the red light district.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am looking forward to experiencing them in Amsterdam next week! I am sure it will be pushing me a bit out of my comfort zone.

  • http://www.alkeksabroad.com/ Courtney {Alkeks Abroad}

I was soooo scared to dive when we went to the Great Barrier Reef. Like I literally thought I was going to die, but Travis signed me up anyway so I couldn’t back out. Once I was down in the water I really liked it, but unfortunately my ears did not cooperate. I still tried to take the certification class later thinking it was a fluke but I didn’t pass the dive medical because of my ears. I feel like I saw all of the same things when we went snorkeling afterwards anyway, it was all sooooo amazing. I think everyone needs to go there and dive/snorkel at least once!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Seriously I totally thought I was going to die. My friend signed me up and then she ended up backing out! My ears did not cooperate either which made it a tad painful, but I am so glad I tried it!

  • http://meetatthebarre.blogspot.com/ Amanda Elizabeth

I have always been a little on the fearful side when it comes to deep sea diving but your pictures are so stunning! I love how you pushed yourself out of the comfort zone because it looks like it was totally worth it!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I don’t know if I will ever try to go scuba diving again, a tad to far out of my comfort zone, but it was worth it!

  • http://heleneinbetween.com/ Helene

wow. this is so cool. and now i’m itching to go to australia.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Australia is just amazing, I would move there again!

  • Kristi M.

I’m jealous of your reef pictures!! The dive shop I went with took us to crappy sections of the GBR with dead coral, etc. I’m glad you had such a great time, and welcome to the diver community!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh darn! You will have to go again :) And thanks, the diver community is full of some brave people :)

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

ahhh so glad you did it. we were going to, but the weather was insane and they advised highly against it, so we did the glass bottom boat. i was kinda glad as i was way too scared, silly i know, but i can always go back!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh man if the weather had been bad I think I would have totally chickened out I was soo scared! The glass bottom boat was really great as well!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am so glad I got to experience it!

  • http://atstarfish.blogspot.com/ Katya

Scuba diving is definitely on my list! I am usually a total adventurer and would try anything new and fun during my travels (well, almost:) So, you are completely right - travels push you out of your comfort zone. I would add that traveling happens to dig out the best in people (oh so I’ve noticed) - makes them braver, more open, more tolerant, more outspoken.

Maybe you’d like to take a peak at my snorkel experience -

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

You would love scuba diving then! Travel really does push you out of your comfort zone, I think it totally brings out the best (and worst) in people. I know it makes me so much braver!

  • Life As Kate

This is great! I am also terrified of diving but have mastered the snorkel! Travel seems to bring out the best of people!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I think I will stick to snorkeling as well:) And I agree, I think travel really does bring out the best in people!

  • http://www.adventuresofalondonkiwi.blogspot.com/ adventuresofalondonkiwi

*shudder* it looks incredible, but I’m just not sure I could ever do it…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am not sure I will ever be brave enough to do it again! It was a really cool experience though :)

  • http://ofgoldenroses.blogspot.com/ Sara Rose

I absolutely love snorkeling, I would love to snorkel there one day!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Me too! Snorkeling is so fun.

  • http://treasuretromp.com/ Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

ah, I had the same experience when trying SCUBA diving! Wasn’t it just the most amazing experience? I want to go back!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really was such an amazing experience! I may have to put on my brave face and try it again one day:)

  • Eric Brink

My 84 year-old Mother in Law recently did a long bungee jump in South Africa. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      Wow that is awesome!

  • Eric Brink

As for me, I’m more attracted to exploring remote areas above the water, which probably explains 2 trips to Iceland, a visit to the NW Territories in Canada, getting chased of a Churchill Canada research site by a polar bear, and last November’s visit to the a remote portion of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil.

  • Tiffany Ingram

Amazing girl! I’m so happy to find your blog because I’m seriously in need of a trip to Australia! It looks so beautiful and I’d love to snorkel there…it’s way to cold here in San Francisco to go in the water!

    Xx, Tiffany | http://www.sunshinedaydreamphotography.com/

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Australia is amazing! But I am a big fan of San Fran as well!

  • http://www.therandomwritings.com/ Rachel G

I think you are super brave! I have a few family members who are quite into scuba diving-even my grandpa was, back in the day-but I’m not a huge fan of being underwater…it probably doesn’t help that I’m a very mediocre swimmer…
This seriously looks like it was a really cool experience!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thanks Rachel :) I don’t know if I ever will try it again but it was a really cool experience!

  • http://blettany.blogspot.com/ Brittany Johnson

Scuba diving is a blast! I was certified years ago, but now it’s been so long that I’d want to take a refresher course! When my dad and I went to Peru a few years ago, we stayed in a host family’s guest room over night and they didn’t speak a bit of English! It was intimidating and definitely out of my comfort zone, but it was awesome to have a glance into their daily life!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That is an awesome way to get to really experience a new country and their culture!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

I did the Reef when I was 13 (so obviously no scuba-ing) and I really enjoyed it, although what I mainly remember is being caught in a storm and hiding under the blanket with the only other girl on the boat who wasn’t vomiting copiously. Ahhh, travel :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Oh no! I am glad I didn’t get sick on the boat, and that there wasn’t a storm.

  • http://totravelandbeyond.com/ Macy Gutermuth

That is amazing! How were you able to scuba dive without being certified?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I have no idea, maybe they have different rules? I dunno I just signed up with an excursion and of all the ones we looked at we never saw one that required to be certified. I had an instructor in the water next to me the whole time, I don’t think I even knew about being certified when we went.

  • http://www.amoderngirlstravels.com Alexandria

I definitely want to find myself there. Convincing Edward to get into sharks territory is a whole other story, I’ll probably have to go on my own!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      It was an awesome experience!

  • http://www.tothedayslikethis.com/ Sammy @ Days Like This

I have never been Scuba Diving, but I REALLY want to get certified… I think I would be okay at it.. is the equipment heavy!?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It was really difficult to get out of the water with the equipment on you still, I had to be pulled out ha. But when I was in the water it didn’t feel heavy to me.

  • http://www.twofeet-oneworld.com/ Jessi @2feet1world

Oh cool, I’m so glad you went for it! I am a little scared of scuba diving too but I think if I was somewhere like the Barrier I would just have to give it a try :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That was my thought exactly! I felt like I had to at least give it a try and I am so glad I did :)

  • http://www.toothbrushtravels.com/ Amy - Toothbrush Travels

    So pleased that you tried!
It’s better to push yourself and try then decide that you definitely don’t like it then to live a life of regret.
Scuba diving terrifies me but I absolutely love it. It’s so peaceful and beautiful beneath the surface I could happily dive all day x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I completely agree, well said! I am all about living a life without regrets!
