Want to experience a relaxing swim in one of Iceland’s natural hot springs? Better yet, want to have that luxurious water and not have to deal with the crowds like at the Blue Lagoon? Then do I have the perfect steamy secret to tell you!
The Secret Lagoon, located in the Golden Circle area, is a natural hot spring with the mission to keep it natural and unique so that guests can get the true Icelandic experience. I had never heard of the Secret Lagoon before, nor has anyone else I have talked to about it, but when I saw this steamy beauty show up on Instagram I knew I had to visit.
A few quick facts:
- The Secret Lagoon is a geothermal area near the small town of Flúdir, made in 1891 it is one of the oldest swimming pools in Iceland.
- From 1891-1894 the Secret Lagoon was the site of the legislative body of the town. I wonder if this means they held the meetings while relaxing in the water?
- In 1909 the first swimming lessons took place in the Secret Lagoon and they continued to take place every year until 1947. I am pretty sure if my swimming lessons where here I wouldn’t have complained as much about them as a kid.
- Sadly, when the new pool in Flúðir was opened in 1947 the Secret Lagoon became mostly forgotten. I mean how could such a pretty place be forgotten is beyond me, but it is back now so we will forgive them.
Pretty interesting right? There are tons of cool facts about this area, like for example the ladies used to do their laundry in one of the smaller hot springs, Vaðmálahver, next to the Secret Lagoon. Imagine doing your laundry and soaking in a hot spring while you wait for it to dry, sounds quite lovely to me.
The Vaðmálahver hot spring, aka the local washing machine.
A few more things to notice while you are here. This geothermal area is bubbling with little hot springs, like Básahver, the loudest little hot spring around. Just follow the noise and you will find it!
And of course the geothermal area wouldn’t be complete without its own Litli Geysir. The amount of steam that comes from this little pool is impressive, even more impressive is watching it erupt while your floating around in the Secret Lagoon.

With such beautiful surroundings you know you are in for an unforgettable swim at the Secret Lagoon! We may have rushed our walk around the area a bit but only because we couldn’t wait to get into the water. I am going to stop rambling and let the pictures do the talking.
Take it away Secret Lagoon.
H could not stop laughing at my pathetic attempt to float. I use to be so good at floating as a kid, at least I thought I was good at it.
The was constantly going back and forth between the clouds, but I love the affect it had on our pictures.

Ya, it was a good day
