Spring In The Arctic // Life Lately

Happy May Friends!

A throwback picture to last May at one of my favorite waterfalls, because all months should kick off with big beautiful waterfalls!

I can’t help but think, May already! Time certainly is just chugging along isn’t it?

I have no complaints though, summer is almost here and with the longer days comes fun summer adventures to be had. We have a big summer coming up with Scotland next week, a much anticipated trip to Oregon in June, and lots of adventures exploring Iceland the rest of the summer, I can’t wait! Before I get ahead of myself and all the summer fun about to be had a little check in on what I have been up to.

The last time I checked in with a life lately post I was having tons of issues with my hosting site (Bluehost) and had just made the switch to SiteGround . I am happy to report that I have not had any issues since! Seriously, if you are a blogger looking for a good hosting site I highly recommend SiteGround. In non-blog related happenings the Viking and I were preparing for our trip to Slovenia, I was finishing up my Icelandic classes and we were finally saying goodbye to winter.

Since then Spring has fully arrived in Iceland, we have enjoyed fun nights out with friends and have been preparing for all our summer plans.

Here is a look at some of my favorite happenings lately, and there is an exciting announcement at the end of this so stick around!

Last Northern Lights | While I am not at all sad to say goodbye to the dark days of winter I will miss those beautiful Northern Lights that I still feel incredibly lucky to see each time they appear. But before the midnight sun takes over we enjoyed one last gorgeous Northern Lights show, and the Viking and I were actually awake to see them!

More often than not I wake up in the morning to see my Facebook feed full of beautiful Northern Light pictures from the night before. They always seem to come out once I am asleep, but this time I finally was awake late enough to see them.

The Viking and I went out to Grotta Lighthouse (the best place to see the Northern Lights in Reykjavik) to enjoy the show. I couldn’t get enough of the different colors of the sky with the pink colored dusk still on the horizon. Standing on the beach at midnight taking in the Northern Lights and the bright moon, it will be one of my favorite Northern Lights memories for sure.

Yoga on the Beach | Keeping with the whole saying goodbye to winter thing, two weeks ago we said hello to summer (according to the old Icelandic calendar) with some yoga on the beach.

Yoga on the Beach

Even though the yoga on the beach was happening on the “first day of summer” it was still multiple layer weather outside, never have I done yoga in so many layers. But, it was an experience and I love how Icelanders just embrace the weather and don’t wait for a beautiful sunny day to get outside and appreciate it. Some were even doing yoga in their bathing suits! They really took the first day of summer to a whole other level.

Jeannie and I had way too much fun at our first Icelandic yoga on the beach expereince. Although we couldn’t look at each other without getting the case of the giggles, and we may not of been able to nail our partner yoga poses, but its all about having fun right?

Who knew that the first time I would be doing yoga on the beach was in Iceland? Not exactly what I had pictured my first yoga beach session as but it was definitely an experience.

Scotland | 10 more days! The Viking and I are so excited for our upcoming Scotland trip. I can’t wait to see the beautiful Scottish highlands in person, and all those castles to explore, it is going to be amazing! We will be doing a four day road trip in the highlands and then spending a few days in Edinburgh. If you have been to Scotland before I would love to hear what your favorite places were, or a memorable meal you had, I am always looking for new things to add to the list!

Girls Day | I know I went on and on about the amazing girls day I had last weekend, but we are going to talk about it again. When I first moved to Iceland I really struggled to find “my people.” I made many friends in that first year, but I still hadn’t found those friends that you just instantly click with, like the friends that you can just sit and do nothing but still have a great time with.

Do you know what I am talking about?

It is tough to find friends like that, especially when your trying to make those new friends as an adult in a different country. If you are in a similar position and feeling hopeless I say hang in there, your people will come.

I am so glad I found my little group of girlfriends!

Expat friends really are like family, and I am so happy to have found mine. Even better, my friends love exploring around Iceland, we clearly were meant to be.

Icelandic | Last time I checked in I was about to finish my last Icelandic class before heading off to Slovenia, and let me tell you I was more than ready for a break! Well, little did I know I would actually be back in class for another week as the dates had been calculated wrong. Not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed when I got that email while in Slovenia.

But that last week of class was just what I needed to keep my motivation up. With few students showing up for the last week this gave us more time to practice actually speaking Icelandic, something that I find both incredibly challenging yet motivating at the same time. When I finally figure out how to put together a sentence to make myself understood it just makes me want to learn even more.

I am happy to say that I finished this Icelandic class with no bad feelings towards my language learning, which to me is a huge relief. I tend to feel so overwhelmed with Icelandic that I just get frustrated and give up. But not this time, I am ready to keep on learning. With class officially done teacher H will be stepping in for my summer school so hopefully I can keep this Icelandic learning momentum going!

80s Party | This past weekend the Viking and I joined our friends for an 80s prom theme murder mystery party. I will take any excuse to dress up in fun outfits!

This is H and I’s third murder mystery party this year, apparently they are quite popular right now. I have to say that our night at the prom party has to be my favorite one so far. Probably because the outfits were just the best! And now I can say that the Viking and I went to prom together.

All You Lovely Readers | When I first started blogging two years ago I never thought about all the wonderful people I would met through my blog. The blogging community is like a big group of friends that you can always count on and I love being apart of it. While I enjoy connecting with other bloggers nothing makes my day more than the comments I get from my readers. Seriously, you all are the best, I appreciate every one of you for stopping by my little space to read about my life in Iceland.

The past few weeks especially I have received some really lovely comments on my Facebook page and they have just made my day. Sometimes blogging can feel overwhelming but just knowing that I helped one person plan an amazing adventures in Iceland, or gave one expat hope that they will feel settled in their new home at some point, it makes it all worth it. So thank you all for reading along!

And now for some exciting news…

Blog Consulting | One of my goals for 2016 is to challenge myself with this little space of mine and see where I can take things. When you have something that you will willingly wake up to work on at 5am before your day job you know you have found a passion. And I want to challenge myself to take my passion even further and see where it can go.

That being said I have decided to start offering blog consulting packages!

I am crazy excited about this and so looking forward to start working with bloggers on their blogging goals. I tend to stay away from writing posts about blogging but after two years of working on my space and seeing it grow I have tons of knowledge to share. I know how overwhelming blogging can feel at times and I want to help as much as to help make your blogging experience a success!

My blog consulting package comes with a full month of working together, including an hour long Skype chat (wine and pjs welcome) and sharing all my insider tips to help you grow your blog. And for For more information on my blog consulting package head over to my Work With Me page.

To kick off my new blog consulting packages I am offering a 20% discount! Use the code LETSBLOG and lets get started working to make your space even more awesome. This offer is only good until May 5th so hurry and book your spot now I would love to work with you to help grow your blog!

You guys, I am super excited about this new adventure and I hope to work with some of you very soon! Sneak peak, I will even share my secrets for nailing the perfect selfie…

Okay, I am still working on that one. But I promise I have some crazy good information to share and will do my best to help you get the most out of your blog consultation!

And with that we are all caught up.

I have a crazy busy month ahead before I head off to Oregon at the beginning of June between Scotland and finishing up work projects, time is going to keep on flying by. I am hoping to fit in some adventures around Iceland as well, there is just so much to do and so little time!

Hope everyone has a wonderful month. Summer is so close!

I live in the UK and visit Scotland at least a couple of times a year. It’s one of my favourite places in the world, you’re going to love it! Some of my favourite areas in the highlands are Glen Coe which is just stunning, and the North West coast. My boyfriend and I went camping there last summer - you can camp wherever you like, and we spent the most amazing nights camping on the incredible beaches and cliff tops near Ullapool. I would also recommend boat trips out to islands like Mull, Iona or Lewis but you might not have time for that on this trip.
We love Scotland so much we’re getting married up there next May, at Inshriach House near Aviemore which is another area I would highly recommend! It’s just stunning, and if you haven’t got your accommodation booked yet, check out the properties at Inshriach where you can sleep in a yurt, shepherds hut, Bothy or converted fire engine (!) I’ll be in one of them for my wedding night and they look amazing: http://www.canopyandstars.co.uk/britain/scotland/highland/inshriach-house

Walking round Loch an Eilean or watersports on Loch Insh are two of my favourite things to do in that area, plus the whisky and chocolate tasting tour at Dalwhinnie Distillery! And if you find yourself in Fort William, definitely go to Crannog Restaurant! It’s one of my absolute favourites for gorgeous fresh seafood.
Hope I’ve given you a few tips, I used lots of your tips when I went to Iceland so thought I would return the favour! Xx

You’re going to love Edinburgh! I spent two days there in February 2015 and I want to go back!
I’d recommend the Sandeman’s free walking tour - very informative, very fun, and takes you to all of the cool sights on and near the Royal Mile. If you join one of the morning tours, you’ll finish the tour around lunch time near the Elephant House Cafe (where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter). It was cool to stop in there to see the castle views from the back window, and also to check out the notes written to JK on the walls in the bathroom! Just a couple buildings next to the Elephant House Cafe is The Outsider Restaurant - my friends and I stumbled upon this restaurant when we were cold and hungry after our walking tour and noticed the cheap but delicious-sounding special board outside. Their food was fantastic and you can get a great price for lunch compared to a lot of other restaurants in the city - you should definitely check it out!!
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, I’ve heard that the free HP walking tour is awesome - I didn’t go because it was rainy the morning we planned to join. Also, you should definitely check out the inside of of the Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile - it’s now (or was in Feb ’15) a market with a cool coffee shop on the inside. There’s one stand that has soaps and lotion made in Scotland, I got my mom a container of beeswax lip balm and she’s not even all the way through it a year and a half on. St. Giles Cathedral is also worth a walk through, very pretty and we caught the orchestra during a rehearsal and got to listen to them for nearly an hour.
Definitely head up to King Arthur’s Seat and spend some time getting lost in that area! We spent an entire afternoon wandering Holyrood Park. I’d also recommend spending some time in the “new town” - there’s great shopping (Primark, holla!) and I wish I’d been able to spend more time there.

    yay for blog consulting!

Also, I am interested to hear about SiteGround. I’ve been thinking about switching away from BlueHost for a while.

  • http://www.anestingnomad.com/ Rachel

Ooh I’ve just moved to SiteGround for my migration to WordPress. I haven’t actually hit the go live button yet, but so far SiteGround have been super helpful, very easy to contact and don’t make me feel bad for asking stupid questions. And they’re really not expensive. I am a big fan!

And those Northern Lights shots are incredible. I need to see them in person one day! Does it ever get ‘normal’ seeing them?

I just returned from a five day adventure around Scotland, and it’s an incredible country. I can’t recommend the Conic Hill trail at Loch Lomond National Park enough. It takes about two hours round trip, and it’s moderately steep at points, but the view is incredible! That hike was my favorite experience of the whole trip. Another must, in my book, is Glencoe Mountain Resort - in the summer, you can ride the chairlift to the top of the mountain and enjoy yet another classic Highlands view. Compared to scenic chairlifts in the States, I thought this one was quite reasonably priced (about thirteen USD).

As far as castles go, Dunstaffnage Castle is my favorite - it’s only a few minutes from Oban, a charming little town on the sea. The town of Inveraray is also quite lovely to visit. Edinburgh is a lot of fun; be sure to climb up the Scott Monument (it’s situated right off the Royal Mile and is so bizarre looking that you can’t miss it) for the best view of the city. And even though it’s pricey, I don’t think anyone should miss out on Edinburgh Castle, but definitely book ahead of time. The lines there are wild!

Happy May! First, could you two be any cuter? Love the 80s garb! And CONGRATULATIONS on the new blog consulting venture! You go, girl! I just may have to sign up myself ;). Also, I am so excited for you about Scotland-you’ll love it! I really loved stopping in Stirling to see the castle and the cute little town, and seeing Loch Lomond. As for Edinburgh, the Elephant House, Sir Scott Monument, Arthur’s Seat…there is so much to see there!

  • Steph Gregerson

It’s so awesome that you’re branching out. Your blog is one of my favorites! I can’t wait to hear about your upcoming summer adventures. Cheers!

You will love Scotland! I especially loved the Isle of Skye, Culloden Battlefield, the Wallace Monument, Glencoe, Loch Ness and all the castle ruins. When are you leaving?
