Inside Tips to Reykjavik, Iceland

Welcome to Reykjavik, the northern most capital in the world! This quirky city may be small put it has a lot to offer! With these Discover the best of Reykjavik with these 10 insider tips, you will be navigating around like a local in no time!

10-Tips

One | In the city for the night and hoping for a glimpse of the Northern Lights? Your best bet is to head out to the light house in Seltjarnarnes. With few city lights its one of the best places in the city to try and catch a view of the Northern Lights. Be sure to head out to the lighthouse during the day as well, there is a small hot pool were you can soak your feet and enjoy the ocean view.

Two | Visiting the swimming pools in Reykjavik is a must, just be prepared to walk into a locker room full of naked people. In Iceland you must shower first without your suit on before entering the pools. Covering up with a towel only makes you stand out more, just embrace it the pools are totally worth it.

Three | Not sure what to wear for the day? Layers are key in Iceland, one minute it will be beautiful and sunny, the next a wind storm followed by snow, be prepared for all elements. And when in doubt black is a go to option, you will blend right in, or do as I do and wear neon to truly stand out.

Four | Keep in mind that if you want to stock up on groceries most stores close between 6-7pm. Otherwise you are left with the very expensive corner shops, trust me you don’t want that.

Five | Looking to try some Icelandic cuisine on a budget? Go down to the harbor and and order lobster soup from the Sea Barron. Ask for extra lobster and smile, you usually get it thrown in by the owner on the house and its one of my favorite meals in town! Or grab a traditional Icelandic hotdog from the stand near the harbor, get it with all the works and be prepared to wait in line, this place is always hopping!

Six | Before you arrive in Reykjavik be sure to download these two apps to your phone:

Stætó.is- The ultimate guide to the local bus system. If your planning on using the bus system while in Reykjavik this app is a life saver!

Appy Hour- This app tells you all the happy hours in the area, the deals you can find at what bars, as well as the times. Its a great app to get your pre-pre party started and still have money to hit the town later!

Seven | Want to party like an Icelander? Do your wallet a favor and grab some drinks at the liquor store to enjoy before heading out to the bars. You can expect to spend 10 USD/8 Euros for a beer and it will add up quickly! If you want a true taste of the nightlife don’t head out until after midnight, you will be the only one in the bars otherwise! And I highly recommend a pre-party nap, Icelanders get down until the wee hours of the morning.

Eight | Hoping to score on some Icelandic wool products? Before spending your savings on an overpriced shop head down to the flea market near the harbor and score handmade goods for half the price. You are going to want your own Lopapeysa after seeing everyone wearing one in town!

Icelandic Lopapeysa

Nine | Don’t be concerned about the funky smell of the water. I promise it won’t leave you smelling of sulfur after you shower and cold water from tap will be some of the best water you have ever tried!

Ten | The best way to view the city is from the top tower of the church Hallgrímskirkja located in the center of Reykjavik. You have to pay a small fee around 4 USD/3 Euros to go to the top tower but the views are worth it, especially if it is a clear sunny day in Reykjavik!

I love how colorful the cityscape is! The buildings almost look like little lego pieces. I live in Taiwan and all of the buildings are made out of cement, and except for temples, they are all eye sores. You’re lucky to live in such a colorful, beautiful place!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I love the color houses as well, totally normal to walk by a neon green house next to a pink one;) I would love to get to walk by temples all the time but I totally agree, gotta have some color to bring things to life!

Great tips! We’re not planning to spend a whole lot of time in Reykjavik (probably just one afternoon), but your tips are going to be super helpful to us nonetheless! :)

I love your tip about shopping at the market for the wool products! What a great way to save! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Iceland is so expensive so I am all about finding ways to save!

Haha, #2 made me smile. Reykjavik is where this American had to learn to finally embrace nudity in those thermal pool locker rooms… and it was totally fine. It does us all some good to adapt and accept these local customs :) I heard that people will even give you dirty looks if they think you haven’t showered sufficiently before entering the pool!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha same here, now I am so used to it I forget about it but I know when my family comes it will be quite a shock to them. I know in the big pools they have someone watching the showers to make sure you wash up!

I love this!! I like exploring a place less like a tourist and go where the locals go, so this is exactly the kind of guide I just love! Love seeing lighthouses and the view of the city is just amazing! Makes me want to go even more!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Thanks so much! I agree, getting the local tips are always the best! I hope you get to travel this way!

  • http://bitsofdays.com/ Zia @ Bits of Days

Awesome! I love it! I thought it was bad that in Germany grocery stores close at 9 pm, can’t imagine that in Reykjavik it’s even earlier! Thanks for the lobster soup tip! Now you really make me want one… Do people usually speak English in Iceland though?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Ugh it is so frustrating having the stores close so early. Everyone can speak english, they are taught from like age 6. The older generations aren’t as fluent but for the most part everyone can carry conversations on with you. I have found the Scandinavian countries tend to have really good english.

I’ve always wanted to see the Northern lights. Our local grocery shop stays open till 8 expect on Sunday when it only stays open till 5. And I thought that was bad enough! But I seriously love that you have a lot of money saving tips! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

I am all about saving money! It is so annoying when you are forced to do grocery shopping on the weekends because you can’t make it after work during the week.

I love these! A friend of mine just returned from a short trip there and had a great time. The pictures with colors everywhere are so beautiful! I really need to get over there soon.

I love these tips! Makes me want to visit Iceland right NOW! Also your comment about wearing neon made me laugh - so something I would do before realising the whole country wears black!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Haha yes I tend to wear a bit more colors than the typical Icelanders, nothing wrong with standing out! Yes it is finally warming up a bit so pack your bags and head over to Iceland!

  • http://alexfahey.blogspot.com/ Alex Fahey

Wow! Iceland always seemed like a place that is so out of my reach in terms of travel- but I’ve read a few blogs talking about Iceland and know I really want to go. Reykjavik looks amazing!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene Spence

Oh what a beautiful time to visit Iceland! Yes to both of those things, and check out the local pools they are amazing to relax in!

  • http://northofbloom.com Brittany

Im in the beginning stages of planning a trip and trying to figure out how much time to spend in Iceland? Any tips?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It depends on if your wanting to explore the country a bit and get outside of the city. I think 7-10 days is a great amount of time to travel a lot around the country but if its just short trips from Reykjavik I would say 3-5 days. When are you thinking of coming to Iceland?

      • http://northofbloom.com Brittany

So far the plans are tentatively for May. Any thoughts on that for timing? I think we would definitely be wanting to quite a bit of the country since we’re traveling quite far to get there.
I’ll likely be doing lots of exploring on your blog to try and get as many insider tips as possible.
Also, this might be me just dreaming but ideally I’d love to pop over somewhere warm in Europe while I’m over there as it’s probably a cheaper and shorter flight from Iceland than Canada. Do you think the airfare is reasonable for traveling to Europe from Iceland?
Thanks so much for your help!!

        • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

That is a good time, the weather can be all over the place but at least there is lots of daylight for exploring! And if your wanting to travel around the country I say the longer time the better there is lost to explore:) The airfare is cheaper than Canada I am sure, check out Wow airlines and Easy jet for budget friendly flights from Iceland :)

I’ll be in Iceland for two weeks in July and can’t wait. After going there a few years ago for only a couple days, I’ve been waiting to go back. I knit and completely love the handmade wool sweaters and blankets. I would love to be able to get some reasonably priced ones as gifts for friends so the flea market sounds perfect. What’s the name of the flea market? Are there multiple? Thanks for sharing (:

How exciting! The flea market is called Kolaportið, it is open on the weekends only. Here is the link http://www.kolaportid.is/. Hope you get to go!
