A Winter Weekend in Iceland

Iceland is spoiling me lately.

Two weekends in a row with sunshine. In January. I don’t even care that it has been freezing cold outside, the sun sparkling off the snow, it is so beautiful.

My weekend, it was full of sunshine, beautiful snowy landscapes and waterfalls. What more do you need for a perfect winter weekend?!

After visiting the unbelievably blue waterfall Brúarfoss last spring I knew I had to return in the winter to see it covered in snow. Bright blue water surrounded by fluffy white snow with the winter sun shining, it was like a scene from a fairytale!

Like I said, Iceland is totally spoiling me this winter.

Now before I go and jinx things lets all take a second to knock on wood, I don’t want all these nice things I am saying about the Icelandic weather to turn on me. Done? Okay lets move on.

I know I just went on about this last week, but adapting to the Icelandic winter, that is a big deal for me. I don’t think I would of made it through another winter like last year, I would of had to pack the Viking up and head somewhere tropical.

While somewhere warm and sunny still sounds amazing I think I would miss these beautiful winter days.

Yes, it is still freezing cold. And yes we don’t get to see the sunshine that often. But you know what, I have seen the sun more times in these first few weeks of January than I remember from all of last winter! Totally not kidding about that. My cabin fever last year, it was bad you guys.

Thankfully Iceland is letting me out of the house this winter, and I am taking full advantage of the nicer weather to get out and explore.

Bruarfoss, Iceland

Now that whole the sun doesn’t rise until almost 11 thing, that is still happening, but I have nothing to complain about. Just check out this sunrise I got to enjoy this weekend.

The pictures, they just don’t do it justice. The sky was the most vibrant orange and red colors, it was beautiful!

I mean amazing right?! When I get to see things like that gorgeous winter sunrise I don’t feel as crazy about the fact that I chose to move to the Arctic.

Our day just got more gorgeous from there with a walk back to one of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland.

Bruarfoss, Iceland

How can you not like winter with a view like that?!

My Viking, he went picture crazy over Brúarfoss, something I more than support since this means I have lots of gorgeous pictures to share with you guys!

Bruarfoss, Iceland

If you are a photographer heading to Iceland you really must add a stop at Brúarfoss to your schedule. This place is just picture perfect, I still can’t decide which season I prefer it in.

I have so many places on my list I want to visit during the winter. It is amazing how places in Iceland can change so much from the different seasons. I am just going to keep my fingers crossed that this gorgeous winter weather continues, I have many more adventures I need to fit in during these snowy months!

Sunshine, snow and waterfalls, this weekend was pretty wonderful. #justagirlandherviking

Until the next weekend adventure Iceland, stay beautiful!

Question of the Day?
How has the winter weather been where you live?

Ahhh so beautiful!!! The weather has been awesome here too - though only during weekdays where I’m sitting in the office all day of course, haha! Don’t mind going out exploring when it’s snowing though - that’s better than rain and ice at least ;)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

You guys have so much more snow, I was loving seeing all the pretty snow on your snapchat! I so agree, I would much rather have snow than rain.

Such gorgeous photos, and you guys make a cute couple. I guess there are perks to a lunchtime sunrise! Does it ever get to you not having much daylight? I live in Utah in the mountains and with our short 8 hours of sun per day in the winter, I tend to get sleepy and sometimes feel slightly down. How does that effect you up there?

One more question - Is the area you live pretty rural, or do you guys just get out of the city whenever possible? Your pictures are all so incredibly free of people. Creates a very calming effect. I love it. :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you Lana! The darkness can get a bit rough, but the darkest time is around Christmas so everything is bright and cheery with lights which helps. When it first starts getting dark I get quite tired but then I adjust. I also take lysi (fish oil) and vitamin D every day which really helps.

We actually live in downtown Reykjavik, the largest city in Iceland. But it doesn’t take long to get out of the city and somewhere with nothing but nature around you I love it!

Wait, so not only do you have crazy, glorious landscaping, but you don’t have to get out of bed for the sunrise until 11am? That is paradise right there.

You do cold weather fashion so much better than I do! I love the hat and scarf combo!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you:) Compared to these fashion savvy Icelanders I still look like I just put on everything in my closet, which basically I do, but hey at least it is warm :)

  • http://www.thoroughlymodernblog.blogspot.com/ Kate

I think I would enjoy winter more if I had that kind of scenery! Although I totally understand that getting very little sunshine must be a struggle. The weather here in northern VA was crazy warm over the holidays, and now it is crazy cold (highs in the low 20s). I wouldn’t mind it so much if we could get a nice snowstorm that would get me out of work, but unfortunately that has yet to happen!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It is crazy how warm the weather was been on the East coast, and then where I am from on the west coast it has been so much colder!

  • http://www.adventuresofadreamcatcher.com Lisa K

Bruarfoss looks incredible! Good for you for not letting the cold weather stop you from exploring!

aww looks like you are really enjoying this winter, and that is so awesome. i reckon i’d enjoy it too if i was surrounded by such gorgeous scenery. but really, it’s great! makes living away from home a lot easier!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

All the pretty scenery really does help make being away from home a bit easier :)
