The Brightside of the Dark Icelandic Winter

Returning back to Iceland after a wonderful trip back home with my family and friends has been a bit rough on me. Homesickness and jet lag have hit me hard this past week and the dark winter days have not made things any easier. After a weekend spent basically sleeping I am starting to feel a bit more like my old self and am determined to not let these dark, cold winter days get me down!

While H and I took a chilly walk over the weekend I challenged myself to come up with things I loved about winter in Iceland. H, the most optimistic person I know, happily played along and decided we couldn’t head home until I came up with ten things. I came back home from our walk frozen but with a list to hopefully help with this January slump. Lets hope this positive outlook on winter last past today!

Grotta Lighthouse, IcelandSo what do I enjoy about winter in Iceland? What is the bright side of the dark Icelandic winter?

1. Naps are encouraged. When there is only 4 hours of daylight anytime is a good time for a little rest.

2.
Back to those few hours of daylight. While the sun may not ever completely rise it creates the perfect golden hour look in the sky, ideal for beautiful pictures.

3. Hibernating an entire weekend is acceptable. No one else wants to leave their house either so keep the Netflix marathons going.

4. Snowy afternoons are perfect for curling up with a cozy blanket and a good book. This is especially helpful right now as I work towards my goal of reading 50 books this year.

5. Winter walks turn into photo shoots, everything just looks so beautiful with snow covering it.

6. An entire new wardrobe is required. You can never have enough winter sweaters! I finally got a new winter coat, it is life changing. And thanks to a beautiful new scarf my mom knitted (in my favorite color purple, thanks mom!) I am now more prepared for our chilly winter walks.

7. Little kids being pulled in their sleds on their way to school. The cutest thing ever! I live near a school and every morning when I head to the car I always see a few kids being pulled by their parents giggling the entire way. I wish I could to take a sled ride on my way to work every day.

8. There can never be too many candles. I love candles and with just a few hours of daylight candles are basically necessary at all times. Even our office has candles everywhere.Any reason to stock up on candles is good enough for me!

9. The extra long Christmas break. Coming from the states where there is hardly any time off during the Christmas holiday I love the near two week holiday period here in Iceland. It is a much needed time off to recharge your batteries in the middle of winter that is for sure!

10. Soaking in the pools on a chilly winter night. Laying in the hot water with the steam rising off adds a mystical feel to the pools and I love it, well until I have to get out of the pool and run into the locker room I love it.

Grotta Lighthouse, IcelandGrotta Lighthouse, IcelandTen reasons to love winter in Iceland, done!

By the time I finished my list (which was only 15 minutes in to our walk) I could not feel my hands at all, not really helpful for my love winter time goal. At this point in our walk we had arrived at a small hot water pool, perfect for warming your hands, and my hope for tolerating loving winter was restored.

Grotta Lighthouse, IcelandGrotta Lighthouse, IcelandGrotta Lighthouse, IcelandI seriously debated dipping my whole head into that toasty warm water, it was tempting for sure.

By this point I had been outside 20 minutes to long and made the break for the car. Try as I might I am just not made for cold weather, I may live in Iceland but I have my limits!

Grotta Lighthouse, IcelandGrotta Lighthouse, IcelandGrotta Lighthouse, IcelandWhen it is this beautiful outside I can face the cold, at least for a little bit. Now I am off to re-read my list over and over again until I forget the fact that snow fall off the roof of my car into my coat this morning.

Happy Monday!

Question of the Day?
Are you a fan of cold weather? What do you love about winter?

If you are ever in Reykjavik a visit to the Grótta Lighthouse is a must! You will want to save this map, it is the perfect place for a walk!

love this positive outlook- and these photos! having that light would be a definite reason to venture into the cold :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It helps living with such a positive person to try and find the good things about the freezing cold winter!

  • http://bristolinmypocket.blogspot.co.uk/ Sara Rose

Yes to candles! My current apartment in England doesn’t allow me to burn candles which is SUCH a bummer!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ugh that would be such a bummer! I have to have my candles, if I don’t have any lit at night it feels so dark and unwelcoming in my flat!

  • http://heyimbeckyblog.wordpress.com/ Becky Kozak

I just discovered your blog and I am LOVING the Iceland posts, definitely on my to travel list, so so so beautiful! I can’t believe the 4 hours of daylight, but I suppose summer days will be super long too? xx B

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yay welcome Becky! Yes, during the summer the sun really never sets so it makes up for the dark winter days!

  • http://www.rhymeandribbons.com/ Amanda @ Rhyme & Ribbons

Even just the idea of little kids going to school on sleds melts my heart! x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

      It seriously is so adorable!

  • http://ceciliaintherain.wordpress.com Cecilia

Yup! Candles and snow and any excuse to wear (or knit) woolly jumpers! You are lucky you have snow as well, it actually brightens the place up a lot. We don’t have it dark for as long here, but it really is dreary when it’s all dark, and rainy and windy and wet and no snow to brighten up the place..

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes snow really does help brighten up the dark days. For the first part of winter there was no snow and everything was just so dark and dreary.

  • http://www.adventurings.com Cynthia

Those thermal pools along your walk are so fascinating- I love it! Very good list- I do love that winter is a perfect time to do all those cozy things (tea, blankets, good book) that you can’t do in the warmer months. And sweaters! I’ve definitely taken a queue from the Scandinavian tradition and have been lighting tons and tons of candles this season. (although I’ve forgotten to do it the past week or so, thanks for the reminder!)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I love the thermal pools as well, one of my favorite things about Iceland!

  • http://www.somethingsaturdays.com/the-blog.html Elizabeth @Something Saturdays

I had a similar experience turning back in the middle of a walk yesterday due to the cold. No shame in that! haha

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Not at all, at least we went outside and braved the cold for a little bit!

  • http://www.adifferentpieceofsky.com Sara

I’ve been obsessed with candles lately too! Just makes everything feel more cozy. Beautiful pictures and I loved reading the list. I’m from a notoriously cold city in Canada, but I still cannot imagine only having four hours of daylight — that must be so weird!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It takes some getting use to having the few hours of daylight. Thankfully everything is brightening up now and each day gets longer and longer.

  • http://alysoncornmanphotography.blogspot.com/ Alyson

I am not a cold weather person, not. at. all. I like your list of 10 things to love about Iceland in the winter. I may have to make my own for Pittsburgh to recite to myself over and over again when those Winter blues really start to take over.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am not the biggest fan of cold weather either so this list is going to have to be read over and over again to remind me of the positive things!

  • http://www.akeanesenseofadventure.com/ Christine @ A Keane Sense of A

Being a Texan, definitely not a fan of winter, ha! But your photos make winter look pretty darn nice! 4 hours of sunlight? That’s rough! But I remember when my husband used to tell me he was going golfing at 2 AM in the summer cause it was still daylight!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes the winter darkness is rough but the summer daylight is pretty wonderful! You basically have to hibernate in the winter and then you use all that energy you saved up during the bright summer months.

  • http://www.teamstarnes.com Alexandra @ Team Starnes

Oye. I feel you on the jetlag and the cold, dark days making it hard to get out of bed… We have about 6ish hours of light and I’ve been struggling to get out of bed… Coupled with a cold, I have basically been a sloth… LOL! I can’t believe you have pools to get into. Are they located just all over?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Ugh that sounds like me when we first got home. I was so jet lagged and getting over a cold, all I wanted to do was stay in bed! There is pools all over and they are amazing! Definitely a must do when in Iceland.

  • http://www.truecoloursblog.com Casey

I found the sky in the winter in Iceland to be just gorgeous!!! You’re so right, it never really rises fully so the whole days are just this pastel-y type color… so beautiful!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The winter sky really is so gorgeous. I am interested to hear what you think about Iceland during the spring/summer time when you guys visit!

      • http://www.truecoloursblog.com Casey

I’m so excited to see it in the Spring/Summer too… I’ve heard it looks so different!

  • http://www.brookemeaganjones.com/ Brooke Jones

I’m constantly saying how I’m not meant to live in the cold! I turn into an old woman and all my joints ache and I’m just a mess haha Love this list and your pictures are beautiful. I can see how the dark would get to you after awhile, but I’m down with candles and hibernation. And my boyfriend swears by naps! He has one almost every day lol Your new scarf is so pretty. Homemade items are the best :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Haha same here, I am always saying I am met to live on a tropical island.Thank you, I agree, homemade items are the best :)

  • http://www.kati-rose.com/ Kati Rose

I’m from Minnesota so unfortunately I’m used to long brutal winters. Every year I have to go through a similar process of reminding myself of the positives when it gets gross. There is a certain beauty to winter like you said and that probably always ends up being my biggest reminder. Fresh after a snowfall everything looks so magical.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

So true, every year it is a process making in through the winter months! The magical look after a fresh snowfall really is beautiful!

  • http://snowintromso.com/ Van @ Snow in Tromso

I’ve been totally homesick after going back to Norway as well and while the darkness surely doesn’t help at all, at least it’s getting brighter every day and we’ve had a couple of days without wind and snowfall so that’s always a plus :) Beautiful pictures!!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Once it starts getting brighter it really happens quickly and helps so much! Is it often windy there, I know it is windy here and it makes it so much colder out!

  • http://www.laughteriscatching.com/ Laura @ Laughter is Catching

I think Grotta is where we went when we went hunting the Northern Lights. I absolutely adored the really short days and the golden sky, but i think it was all the more magical because its so different to what I am used to. I can totally understand how you might get a little seasonal affective disorder from time to time!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes it probably is, you often see the groups out there hunting the Northern Lights. I live just a short drive away so it is are go to spot as well to look for the Northern Lights!

  • http://www.seeyouinaporridge.com/ Kristen @ SYIAP

what gorgeous photos! meanwhile, i want to ride (take?) a sled now please.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I know right, where are my daily sled rides?!

  • http://whattheelleblog.blogspot.com/ Elle @ WhatTheElle

I feel ya on the jet lag! I was sick on my journey back so I was insufferable and broke the “no nap” rule. I can’t shake off how disoriented I am, and the early sunsets + post-holiday mopey mood definitely doesn’t help! Once I’m done with all my final papers I can’t wait to get outside and go for walks, even if it’s cold and rainy :) Your pictures still make me want to visit Iceland, even with all the snow haha, but maybe when it’s a liiiiiiittle warmer…

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The post holiday blues, jet lag, and being sick, all not a fun mix! I am ready for summer!

  • http://www.touchofserendipityblog.com/ raganwesson

Wow - I love your pictures! I recently found your instagram account but I am so happy to have found your blog. I’ve never been to Iceland but now I really want to visit!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thank you! And welcome, thank you for reading :)

  • http://www.notentirelyperfect.com/ Stephanie

Wow, 4 hours of daylight! I’m not sure how you do it, but it certainly makes for beautiful photos.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I am not sure how I am doing it either, lots of sleeping!

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

Ugh, I feel ya girl. We’re not so bad here, relatively (it’s light at 10 and dark by 4) but it’s literally never sunny. Never ever. Constant naps are awesome, though, if not particularly productive :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Thankfully we have had some sunshine the past few days, it is far to cold to be outside for more than a few minutes but at least it brightens things up!

  • http://somewhereyonder.blogspot.co.uk/ Claire (@Kurea_San)

Wow - look at all that snow. The light/twilight looks so calm as well. Beautiful.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Calm and beautiful I think are great words to describe it!

  • http://www.clemandmarcella.wordpress.com/ Marcella ~ WhatAWonderfulWorld

Beautiful post - such a nice reminder that there are so many things to still smile about even when we are in the depths of the winter blues :) I love the sky in your pictures - it’s captivating!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Exactly, I am going to have to remind myself of these things several times before winter is over I am sure!

  • http://www.missdirections.com/ MissDirections

You’ve actually scared me a little now. We’re planning our trip for early-mid December right when it’s darkest and probably coldest. I consider anything under 21 degrees (70F) cold. Lots of layers, right? Haha. Looking forward to the extended twilight hours though.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Well it will be beautiful, but yes, very cold for you. The temperature will range from -4 to +5, maybe snow maybe not you never know. But still, it will be amazing to visit!

  • http://www.therachaelway.com/ Rachael

Kids being pulled by sleds??? That’s adorable!!!
Ah I cannot wait to visit! Lisa and I are booking our flights TOMORROW!

Really!!! That is so exciting you ladies will have to tell me when your coming!

  • http://letuswanderlust.blogspot.com/ Carly @ Let Us Wanderlust

I do quite like the cold weather but not the really, really freezing temperatures that I’ve experienced while travelling (it doesn’t get that cold in Aus!). But I do love snuggling down in front on the fire on a cold winters night and wearing winter socks and UGG boots too! X

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I prefer an Australian style winter (aka not cold at all) but it is nice snuggling up in cozy clothes in front of a fire :)

  • http://jamiewrit.es/ Jamie

Candles and acceptable hibernation are all such a major part of our lives here now… and easily sleeping late! I’d have to actually say that I prefer the darkest days of winter to the brightest days of summer simply because the annoyance of sleeping with the sun up 23 hours drives me CRAZY. The only thing I completely can’t relate to are the hot pools. Bummer, we need those here too.

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

I find the bright days of summer a bit annoying as well, I wish it would just balance out over the whole year.

  • http://www.crumbsinthebed.com/ Kerri

You look so cold! I think 20mins was too long :)

I don’t mind the winter when it’s sunny and dry, as soon as it rains and gets windy, then I like to hide away indoors. The snow, I love, the ice and slush afterwards not so much… Snow is probably my favourite thing about the winter, it’s just a shame we don’t get too much in Belgium.

The scenery makes up for it, at least a little bit!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Those calm sunny winter days are the best!

  • http://themochileradiaries.com Leah Kate

Hahah did the snow fall right down the back of your jacket onto your bare skin?? That’s the WORST! Hahaha oh man I don’t miss snowy winters when I think about the numb hands/feet/noses! Sure is beautiful there though!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yes! Ugh the worst for sure ha.

  • http://www.simplysaratravel.com/ Sara

Love your optimism! Winter is not my favorite (I much prefer spring and autumn), and although winter in Paris isn’t bitter cold, it is overcast and rainy most of the time. But I do appreciate that it’s low tourist season and it feels like the locals have the city to ourselves, which is nice. So I agree, there are positives :-)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

There is not as many tourist here right now either which is nice, the city itself is not big so during the summer it gets so crowded with everyone!

  • Kristen

I love this! Your blog is definuitely the reason Iceland is on my bucket list of places to visit!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

Yay! I hope you get to visit Iceland soon!

  • http://www.wineandolives.co.uk/ Chiara Pannozzo

Your photos are just gorgeous! Jet lag combined with home sickness sounds like a totall bummer, but it sounds like you’re dealing with it so much better than I would x

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really is not a fun mix that is for sure! But lots of naps and cozy days inside are definitely helping.

  • http://www.deutsch-bitte.net/ Natalye

Making a list of things you enjoy about winter in Iceland is such a good idea… a perfect cure for homesickness, or at least making one think about the positive aspects of a city. I enjoyed reading your list, and the pictures were beautiful.

Do they have little pools for warming your hands often? Is that a thing?

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

The little pool is actually one where people can sit in, we just used it for our hands. There are many local pools in the city, this is the only little one I know of just out in the open. Thank you for reading!

I used to love going to the hot pools in NZ in the winter at night, so relaxing! but yeah, the getting out not so great. I think getting through a crappy cold winter definitely requires a positive things list!

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki

It really is so relaxing sitting in the pools, but getting out is definitely not fun at all!

  • http://writergirlm.com/ Martha

Ooh, four hours of daylight?! I really struggle with the gloom of winter so I’m not sure if I would be too chipper, either! But your photos are beautiful-and I guess having plenty of time to read surrounded by candles wouldn’t be too bad. The long Christmas break sounds amazing too-a mid-winter vacation is definitely a must for recharging and relaxing.

I don’t deal with the cold too well, so those hot pools would be pretty tempting. I have a friend who vacationed in Iceland and didn’t mind the cold at all, though-I guess some people are better with it! Me, I need my thick socks and an electric blanket at all times :)

    • http://unlockingkiki.com/ Kaelene @ Unlocking Kiki
